One of the core areas for volunteering is within the Food Hub, where volunteers play a crucial role in processing and preparing food supplies for those in need. On Saturdays, up to 85 volunteers can come together to take part in the Community Wellbeing Day. During this day, volunteers assist with sorting bulk supplies, packaging food, and preparing essential resources that will be distributed to pensioners, caravan parks, and other vulnerable communities. In addition to this, groups from various sectors such as corporate teams, parish groups, youth and family groups, or other local organizations can apply to join the Food Hub volunteering efforts. These groups may also return to contribute to different departments within the organization, depending on their skills and expertise. For example, some groups donate bulk resources or offer their workplace connections and networks, which help increase the capacity of the Food Hub and Vinnies’ outreach efforts. By engaging with the Food Hub, volunteers not only provide vital support, but they also forge new relationships and strengthen community bonds. Many groups who volunteer initially as part of a one-time event often return to lend a hand in other areas, building lasting connections with the organization and fellow volunteers.
Vinnies also relies on volunteers to support important fundraising and awareness campaigns, such as the Chairman’s Christmas Appeal, where volunteers assist with collecting and distributing gifts, resources, and donations. Volunteers help coordinate these efforts by getting their workplace or social groups involved in organizing and supporting the campaign. In addition to the Christmas Appeal, volunteers help with ongoing fundraising campaigns that support Vinnies’ mission and services. Their involvement extends to promoting events, spreading awareness, and gathering resources needed to fund Vinnies' outreach programs.
The Production Kitchen is another important area where volunteers contribute their time and skills. The kitchen works closely with schools to provide gateways for students to upskill and gain hands-on experience in a professional kitchen environment. Volunteers in the kitchen help prepare meals for the community and work alongside students, offering mentorship and guidance. Some volunteers come from retirement or look for a different kind of work experience. Others may apply to join the kitchen crew as part of a specific interest in cooking and food preparation. By volunteering in the kitchen, individuals gain valuable skills, and in some cases, students can earn placement credentials that help them in their future careers.
